Something special is brewing at the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston, from April 21 - 23 when the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History presents three days of Free Family Fun to coincide with spring break week in Kanawha, Boone, Calhoun, Clay, Fayette, Jackson, Lincoln, Putnam and Raleigh counties. Hands-on activities are geared for children; however, visitors of all ages are invited to discover something new by participating in the free events. Each day features two sessions:
10 a.m. - noon and 1 - 3 p.m.
Monday, April 21, will have kids coloring sun visors and making colorful leis out of foam flowers and string. They also can create a butterfly out of clothespins and coffee filters to hang in their window. In addition, children can decorate flower pots and plant seeds to grow their own spring flowers.
Kids will take to the air on Tuesday, April 22. They can color a frisbee or build and trim a wooden airplane that really flies. They also can take advantage of the spring breeze by making a kite and decorating it with their own designs.
Wednesday, April 23, will feature the art of puppet-making. Children can decorate their own pre-cut, felt finger puppet with hair, eyes and clothes. They also can try their hand at making puppets out of socks and paper bags, then take their creations home for their own puppet show. Those who wish to make more than one sock puppet should bring additional socks.
Morning and afternoon sessions offer the same programs, and the Division will provide all supplies. Visitors who wish to come for the entire day are encouraged to bring a bag lunch and picnic outside between sessions. Because of the nature of the activities, children should wear their play clothes.
