The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History is accepting applications for its 18th annual African- American Heritage Arts Camp. The camp offers students of all races and ethnic backgrounds who have completed grades 8-12, an opportunity to study the performing and visual arts with professional artists.
Disciplines of instruction include dance (modern, jazz, hip-hop, classical ballet and Afro-Haitian dance); vocal music (proper techniques and presentation); percussion (African drumming and African-American art forms of jazz, blues and popular music); visual arts (painting and drawing techniques); drama (basic theater skills); orchestral strings (performance techniques for a string ensemble); and band (performance techniques for a brass and/or woodwind band).
This year’s camp will be held June 12-19, 2004 at Camp Washington-Carver in Clifftop, Fayette County. Arts camp participants will be housed in the dormitory at the camp. Meals will be served in the Great Chestnut Lodge.
An enrollment fee of $100 includes lodging, three meals per day and all the instructional materials. Funding for the camp is provided is provided by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History and the Bernard H. and Blanche E. Jacobson Foundation.
