The West Virginia Commission on the Arts (WVCA) and the arts staff of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History are in the process of developing a new State Arts Plan. A core planning committee consisting of artists, art educators, arts administrators, WVCA members, Department of Arts, Culture and History cabinet secretary Kay Goodwin, Division commissioner Nancy P. Herholdt and the Division’s arts staff already have laid the groundwork for the planning process.
Arts staff and members of the committee are going to hold public meetings in various locations throughout the state to collect input from local citizens concerning the arts and the programs and services of the WVCA and the Division. The meetings will explain the purpose of the planning process, seek citizen input, survey activities presently available, discuss challenges the arts face in local communities, share a draft of the new mission/vision/value statements, invite responses to an arts survey and provide training for a public input questionnaire.
The plan’s purpose is to develop programs and services responsive to the needs of the state’s artists and arts organizations, identify methods to increase public participation in the arts and public interest in the work of the WVCA and the Division, consider decisions which set priorities for funding areas and distribution of funds, improve reporting to the state legislature on the effectiveness of public funding for the arts, develop new resources and fulfill planning requirements of the West Virginia Code and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Artists, arts administrators and organizations, art faculty members, community arts and social service volunteers and other interested participants are invited to attend the meetings and have their voices heard.
