The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History and West Virginia Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin will host a public meeting in Logan on Thursday, Dec. 12, beginning at 7 p.m. at the new Chief Logan State Park conference and convention center.
The purpose of the meeting is to gather information from the public regarding the Division’s plans to open a museum at the former park restaurant. Information received at the meeting will be evaluated and used in developing a long-range plan for the museum. Local citizens and organizations are encouraged to attend the meeting to present their ideas for the facility.
Preliminary plans call for museum displays to focus on local history, including the southern West Virginia coalfields, railroads and Native Americans. Exhibits will be made up of artifacts from the Division’s collections.
“It is envisioned that the museum also will showcase some displays from local collectors and enthusiasts,” said Senator Tomblin. “It will also allow the Department of Arts, Culture and History to rotate displays and showings on a regular basis.”
Commissioner Nancy Herholdt of the Department of Arts, Culture and History added, “We are very pleased and excited to have this opportunity to work with residents of Southern West Virginia to help present the rich culture and heritage of the area.”
The Division will manage the museum under an agreement with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, which operates the park. An opening date has not yet been set.
Chief Logan State Park, located four miles north of the town of Logan, is one of the most visited parks in the state’s system. The 3,300-acre park features the new $8.5 million conference and convention center, as well as a campground, outdoor amphitheater and wildlife center.
