The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibit at the Museum in the Park in Logan. The exhibit, “The Mining Life: Coal in Our History and Culture,” will be on display until midsummer 2004 and features historical items and photographs related to early mining methods and tools, coal operators, safety, company towns, the mine wars, and unionization.
“The Mining Life” was first unveiled at the Cultural Center in Charleston in September 1981. Since then, the exhibit has traveled around the state and to the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tenn. The exhibit’s rededication at the Museum in the Park marks both the first time it has been seen in its entirety in more than 13 years and the first time it has been displayed in Logan County.
Part of the Chief Logan State Park complex, the Museum in the Park is a regional cultural center showcasing the best in West Virginia history and the arts. The museum, located four miles north of Logan on W.Va. Rt. 10, is operated by the Department of Arts, Culture and History. Museum hours are Thursday-Friday from 5-9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free. School groups can schedule tours during special hours by calling the museum at (304) 792-7229.
