Sixth History Day event to be held at State Capitol on Feb. 28

The sixth West Virginia History Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the State Capitol Complex during the 75th session of the West Virginia Legislature. Authorized by the legislature and the West Virginia Archives and History Commission, West Virginia History Day celebrates local groups’ efforts to preserve, protect and promote the study of the Mountain State’s past.

Historians, genealogists, educators, preservationists, veterans, fraternal organizations, librarians, ethnic groups, family associations and others with an interest in West Virginia’s history are invited to participate. Attractions in the halls of the Capitol will include historical exhibits, reenactments of events in the state’s history, music and storytelling. In addition, a ceremony will be held at the Cultural Center to honor “History Heroes”—citizens from across the state who have made grassroots contributions to the preservation of local, regional or state history.

The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History joins the Archives and History Commission, Friends of West Virginia Culture and History, West Virginia Historical Society, West Virginia Historical Association, Preservation Alliance of West Virginia Inc., West Virginia Humanities Council, West Virginia Association of Museums and the Mining Your History Foundation as sponsors of this year’s events.

All West Virginia History Day events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Fredrick Armstrong by phone at (304) 558-0230, ext. 164, or by e-mail at [email protected]. Visit the Division’s website at www.wvculture.org/history/historyday2002.html.
