The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History will unveil a new exhibition, Most Recent Works: Henry Keeling, on Thursday, Sept. 9, in the Balcony Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston. A reception to meet the artist will be held at 5:30 p.m. that evening. The free exhibition will remain on display through Nov. 14.
Henry Keeling of Charleston is a well-known figure in the West Virginia arts community. He was the chairman of the art department at the University of Charleston from 1972-1996. He has been featured in many one-man shows including at Gallery 4, Charleston; Huntington Museum of Art; Studio 7, Parkersburg; West Virginia State University, Institute; Ashland Art Center, Ashland, Ky.; and School of Creative Dance and Art, Norwalk, Conn., among others.
Keeling received a bachelor’s degree in interior design from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., a master’s degree in fine art from Marshall University and did additional study at Hans Hofmann School of Fine Art, the Art Students League and New York University in New York, Brooklyn Museum of Art School and the College of Graduate Studies at Institute.
His work is featured in many public collections including Huntington Museum of Art; Edward Albee Collection; Charleston Art Gallery; Consolidated Gas Corporation in Clarksburg; Roanoke Industrial Savings and Loan Corporation, Roanoke, Va.; West Virginia State University; West Virginia State Museum; and in private collections throughout the world.
The show will consist of 12 to 15 abstract paintings, assemblages and collages using acrylics and a variety of other media. All the works have been created in the last year.
