The Museum in the Park at Chief Logan State Park will sponsor a book signing on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., with local author Dr. Coleman C. Hatfield. Hatfield co-authored the new book “The Tale of the Devil: The Biography of Devil Anse Hatfield” with Robert Y. Spence. The museum is located in the former restaurant at Chief Logan State Park. The event is free and open to the public.
The book is the first biography of Devil Anse Hatfield, leader of the infamous Hatfield clan. The story is based on research conducted by historian and freelance writer Spence, and compiled manuscripts of Dr. Hatfield’s father, also named Coleman, who was the grandson of Devil Anse. The book also contains 30 pages of photographs, some of which have never been published before.
“The Tale of the Devil: The Biography of Devil Anse Hatfield” was published by Woodland Press LLC of Chapmanville, and can be ordered from them at 118 Woodland Drive, Chapmanville, W.Va. 25508.
The book signing is timed to coincide with Civil War Days activities which will take place at the park over the same weekend. Visitors also are invited to tour the facility which currently includes a display of coalfield photography from Fayette and Raleigh counties and artifacts related to the early coal mining and railroad industries in southern West Virginia. Other featured exhibits include one about the lives of women in West Virginia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, historic photographs from Lewis and Berkeley counties and items from Logan County collections.
Chief Logan State Park, located four miles north of Logan on State Route 10, is one of the most visited parks in the state’s system. The Museum in the Park opened May 31 under the direction of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History through an agreement with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, which operates the park. Normal operating hours for the museum are Thursday and Friday from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The museum can be reached at (304) 792-7229.
