Art and utility combine in Quilts and Wall Hangings 2001, which opened May 18 in the Great Hall and the Art Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The crowd-pleasing annual juried exhibition features 28 exquisite quilts and 13 wall hangings representing the talents of West Virginia quiltmakers. These colorful, intricately detailed quilts, suspended on the 40-foot-high marble walls of the Great Hall, create an exhibition with lasting impact. The quilt exhibition will remain on display through Sept. 2. The wall hangings can be seen in the Art Gallery, off the Great Hall, through July 29.
First through third places were awarded in four categories: pieced quilts, appliqued quilts, mixed/other quilts and wall hangings. In addition, the exhibition features four honorable mention quilts and a best of show quilt. The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History purchased three of the quilts for the collection of the West Virginia State Museum. A complete list of exhibitors and winners is attached.
Anita Shackelford of Bucyrus, Ohio, served as judge for this year’s exhibition. She is an internationally known teacher and lecturer whose work combines 19th-century dimensional applique techniques and fine hand-quilting with original designs. Shackelford has authored several books including Anita Shackelford: Surface Textures, Coxcomb Variations and Applique for Folded Cutwork, among others.
Quilts and Wall Hangings 2001 will be on display during the 25th annual Vandalia Gathering which will be held May 25-27 at the Cultural Center and on the State Capitol grounds. The awards will be presented to the winning quiltmakers in a ceremony preceding the Vandalia Gathering concert in the West Virginia State Theater of the Cultural Center at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 26.
