The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History is pleased to announce a call for entries for its annual juried quilt and wall hanging exhibition. The summer-long exhibition, Quilts and Wall Hangings 2002, will be displayed in the Great Hall and in the Art Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston. The quilt show will remain on view from May 17 through Sept. 2 while the wall hangings can be seen through Aug. 11.
Quilts handmade by West Virginia residents are eligible for the exhibition and for the following awards: first place, $500 pieced and $500 appliqued; second place, $400 pieced and $400 appliqued; third place, $300 pieced and $300 appliqued. Handmade wall hanging awards are as follows: first place, $500; second place, $400 and third place, $300. In addition, the Division will provide a Purchase Award and add the quilt chosen to the collection of West Virginia State Museum.
A category has been added for entries using a special technique or a significant amount of more-than-one technique. Awards in the mixed/other category apply only to quilts and will be made as follows: first place, $500; second place, $400 and third place, $300. The judge may award a Best of Show award of $100. Honorable mention or other non-monetary awards also will be given at the discretion of the judge. Quilts and wall hangings shown previously in a Department of Arts, Culture and History Quilts and Wall Hangings juried exhibition are not eligible.
All winners will receive ribbons. Awards will be presented on Saturday, May 24, in the West Virginia State Theater of the Cultural Center as part of the 26th Annual Vandalia Gathering.
Entries must be postmarked by March 29 and arrive at the Cultural Center by April 1. Hand-delivered quilts and wall hangings will be accepted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on March 28-29. Each entrant may submit only one quilt or wall hanging, which must be accompanied by a non-refundable entry fee of $20.
Anne Weaver of Durham, N.C., will serve as judge for this year’s exhibition. She is a nationally known teacher and lecturer whose work has been included in such shows as A Garden of Quilts and Cold Night Beauties in Research Triangle Park, N.C., Office of the Mayor and in a two-woman show with Martha Smith, Quiltworks, in Carrboro, N.C., among others. Weaver is also a quilt judge, certified by the National Quilting Association, and has led multiple workshops since 1981.
Weaver will teach a beginners-to-advanced-level quilting workshop at the Cultural Center, “Strings and Stripes,” on Friday, April 5, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Participants will use leftover “strings” of fabric as well as printed striped fabric to achieve one-of-a-kind quilts, wall hangings or miniatures and can work with their choice of squares and rectangles and/or eight-pointed star and hexagon designs. The cost of the workshop is $35. Advance registration is required and seating is limited.
