The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History is pleased to announce a call for entries for its annual juried quilt and wall hanging exhibition. The summer-long exhibition, Quilts and Wall Hangings 2003, will be displayed May 16-Sept. 1 in the Great Hall and in the Art Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston.
Quilts made by West Virginia residents are eligible for the exhibition and for the following awards: first place, $500 pieced and $500 appliqued; second place, $400 pieced and $400 appliqued; third place, $300 pieced and $300 appliqued. Wall hanging awards are as follows: first place, $500; second place, $400 and third place, $300.
A category has been added for entries using a special technique or a significant amount of more than one technique. Awards in the mixed/other category apply only to quilts and will be made as follows: first place, $500; second place, $400 and third place, $300. The judge may award a Best of Show award of $100. Honorable mention or other non-monetary awards also will be given at the discretion of the judge. In addition, the Division will provide a Purchase Award and add the quilt chosen to the collection of the West Virginia State Museum. Quilts and wall hangings shown previously in a Department of Arts, Culture and History Quilts and Wall Hangings juried exhibition are not eligible.
All winners will receive ribbons. Awards will be presented on Saturday, May 24, in the West Virginia State Theater of the Cultural Center as part of the 27th annual Vandalia Gathering.
Entries must be postmarked by March 28 and arrive at the Cultural Center by March 31. Hand-delivered quilts and wall hangings will be accepted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on March 27-28. Each entrant may submit one quilt and one wall hanging. Each entry must be accompanied by a non-refundable fee of $20.
Priscilla Godfrey of Philomont, Va., will serve as judge for this year’s exhibition. Editor of the National Quilting Association’s (NQA) Certified Quilt Judges Quarterly, Godfrey also has served as chairman of the NQA Judges Certification Program and moderator of the group’s annual retreat. Her quilts have been exhibited in NQA shows around the country, and in 1995, her quilt collection was featured in the galleries of the organization’s headquarters in Ellicott City, Md.
Godfrey will teach a “Christmas in April” quilting workshop at the Cultural Center on Friday, April 4, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The machine-piecing workshop will feature patterns suitable for a holiday wall hanging or tree ornaments. The cost of the workshop is $35. Advance registration is required.
