The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History is pleased to announce a call for entries for its annual juried quilt exhibition, which includes a new wall hanging category this year. The summer-long exhibition, Quilts and Wall Hangings 2001, will be displayed on the white marble walls in the Great Hall and in the Art Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston. The quilt show will remain on view from May 18 through Sept. 2 while the wall hangings can be seen through July 29.
Quilts handmade by West Virginia residents are eligible for the exhibition and for the following awards: First Place $500 pieced and $500 appliqued; Second Place $400 pieced and $400 appliqued; Third Place $300 pieced and $300 appliqued. Handmade wall hanging awards are First Place $500; Second Place $400 and Third Place $300 for all categories. In addition, the Division will provide a Purchase Award and add the quilt chosen to the West Virginia State Museum Collection.
A category has been added for entries using a special technique or a significant amount of more-than-one technique. Awards in this mixed/other category apply only to quilts and will be made as follows: First Place $500; Second Place $400; Third Place $300. The judge may award a Best of Show award of $100. Honorable Mention or other non-monetary awards also will be given at the discretion of the judge. Quilts shown previously in a Department of Arts, Culture and History Quilts juried exhibition are not eligible.
All winners will receive ribbons. Awards will be presented on Saturday, May 26, in the West Virginia State Theater of the Cultural Center as part of the 25th anniversary Vandalia Gathering.
Entries must be postmarked by March 30 and arrive at the Cultural Center by April 2. Hand-delivered quilts and wall hangings will be accepted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on March 29-30. Entrants may submit only one quilt or wall hanging, which must be accompanied by a non-refundable entry fee of $20.
Anita Shackelford from Bucyrus, Ohio, will serve as judge for this year’s exhibition. She is an internationally known teacher and lecturer whose work combines 19th-century dimensional applique techniques and fine hand-quilting with original designs. She has been a quiltmaker since 1967, and her work has been exhibited in shows across the United States and in Australia, winning many awards, including 12 Best of Show prizes. She has authored several books including Anita Shackelford: Surface Textures, Coxcomb Variations and Applique with Folded Cutwork, among others. In addition, Shackelford is a quilt judge and Masters judge, certified by the National Quilting Association.
