Art and utility combine in Quilts and Wall Hangings 2002, which opened today in the Great Hall and the Art Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The crowd-pleasing annual juried exhibition features 30 exquisite quilts and 15 wall hangings representing the talents of West Virginia quiltmakers. Quiltmaking is one of West Virginia’s oldest and most-treasured art forms, and this annual display has become a tradition with visitors from all over the United States and abroad. The quilt exhibition will remain on display through Sept. 2. The wall hangings can be seen in the Art Gallery, just off the Great Hall, through Aug. 11.
Prizes were awarded in four categories: pieced quilts, appliqued quilts, mixed/other quilts and wall hangings. In addition, the exhibition features two honorable mention quilts, one honorable mention wallhanging and a best of show quilt. The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History purchased one of the quilts and two of the wallhangings for the collection of the West Virginia State Museum. Anne Weaver of Durham, N.C., served as judge for this year’s exhibition. She is a nationally known teacher and lecturer whose work has been included in such shows as “A Garden of Quilts” and “Cold Night Beauties” at the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Her quilts also have been displayed in the office of the mayor of Durham, N.C., and at Duke Hospital North in Durham. Weaver, a certified instructor and quilt judge for the National Quilting Association, teaches fiber arts for the Durham Arts Council.
Quilts and Wall Hangings 2002 will be on display during the 26th annual Vandalia Gathering which will be held May 24-26 at the Cultural Center and on the State Capitol grounds. The exhibition awards will be presented to the winning quiltmakers in a ceremony preceding the Vandalia Gathering concert in the West Virginia State Theater of the Cultural Center at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 25.
The Cultural Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. The Archives Library is closed on Sunday. For more information about Quilts and Wall Hangings 2002, call (304) 558-0162.
