The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History (WVDCH) is pleased to announce a call for entries for the West Virginia Juried Exhibition 2001. The biennial exhibition showcases works by West Virginia artists in the areas of painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography, mixed media and crafts. The show will be on display at the Cultural Center in the State Capitol Complex from Oct. 7, 2001, through Feb. 3, 2002.
Eighteen awards totaling $33,000 will be presented to artists at the exhibition opening at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, in the West Virginia State Theater of the Cultural Center. Pending appropriation from the West Virginia State Legislature, the awards will be made available through the West Virginia Commission on the Arts of the WVDCH and constitute one of the largest endowments for any single juried art exhibition in the country.
The pieces selected for the show, including the award winners, will be chosen by jurors Garry Barker, director of the Kentucky Folk Art Center in Morehead, Ky., and Teresa Unseld, associate professor of art education at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.
The first round of jurying will be based upon slides, which will be accepted from May 1 to June 15. The slides must be accompanied by an official entry form. The exhibition is open to all artists over the age of 18 who are residents of, and maintain a permanent domicile in, West Virginia. Entrants also must have completed an Artists’ Register form and submitted six slides representative of current work for the file at the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History by June 15.
