West Virginia Juried Exhibition 2001 winners announced

On Saturday, Oct. 13, in the West Virginia State Theater of the Cultural Center, 18 awards totaling $33,000 were presented to West Virginia artists and craftspeople. The awards ceremony preceded the opening of the West Virginia Juried Exhibition 2001 at the Cultural Center.

The exhibition, presented biennially by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, features works in the areas of painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography, mixed media and crafts by 116 West Virginia artists. It will be on display at the Cultural Center through Feb. 3, 2002.

All 126 pieces in the exhibit, including the award winners, were chosen by jurors Garry Barker, director of the Kentucky Folk Art Center in Morehead, Ky., and Teresa S. Unseld, chair of the fine arts department at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C. Barker and Unseld viewed more than 497 submissions to select the show. The awards money is made available through the West Virginia Commission on the Arts of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History from funds appropriated by the West Virginia Legislature. The awards constitute one of the largest endowments for any single juried art exhibition in the country.

Barker said “As a whole, this exhibition reflects much creativity, quality, vision and effort. It is an impressive cross-section of West Virginia’s visual arts world.”

Unseld added “The exhibit clearly reflects some of the best works in the state. I was impressed with the rich variety of subject matter, media and styles.”

Many of the works on display are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. Cultural Center hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information about the West Virginia Juried Exhibition 2001, call Stephanie Y. Lilly, exhibits coordinator, at (304) 558-0220, ext. 128.
