Eight young artists have been selected as winners in the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History’s annual Youth Art Month Exhibition, which is on display through April 21 in the wings of the Balcony Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston.
The winners’ work will be placed in the permanent collection of the West Virginia State Museum. Each of the eight winners will receive a $50 gift certificate from Dick Blick Art Materials at an awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8, in the Great Hall of the Cultural Center.
In addition, three works in the exhibition have been selected to represent West Virginia in the annual Congressional Art Competition for High School Students. The Congressional Competition is sponsored by members of the United States Congress and culminates in a summer exhibition at the United States Capitol building.
The Youth Art Month Exhibition consists of 67 pieces and features the works of 65 students, grades K-12, from 18 West Virginia counties. Artworks in the annual exhibition were selected from a statewide competition. The program is produced in cooperation with the West Virginia Education Association and the West Virginia Department of Education, in celebration of National Youth Art Month.
All winners were chosen by Scott Depot artist Susan Petryszak. She is best known for her oil-on- canvas paintings, and her art has been exhibited in solo shows in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. She has participated in numerous juried exhibitions across the country. In 1999, Petryszak won a $2,000 Award of Excellence in the West Virginia Juried Exhibition at the Cultural Center. In addition, she has been an adjunct professor at Marshall University and Ashland Community College in Ashland, Ky., as well as an artist-in-residence at the Museum in the Community in Hurricane.
