Award winning furniture maker Jim Probst of Probst Furniture Makers will present The Business of Art: Taking it to the Top on Thursday, April 29, at the Clay Center’s Walker Theater. Probst will chronicle the development of his career in woodworking and discuss the processes involved in the craft of furniture making. His presentation is part of a series of workshops featuring some of West Virginia’s most successful craft artists. The program, which begins at 6:30 p.m., is free and open to the public. Los Angeles Center For Digital Art announces an open call for our juried competition featuring digital art. Entrants submit three JPEG files of original work. All styles of artwork and photography created digitally that are suitable for wide format printing will be accepted. This call is international, open to all geographical locations. The selected winner receives 10 archival prints of their work up to 44x60 inches on canvas or museum quality paper (approximately a $1500-$2000 value) to be shown in a solo exhibition in our gallery. Washburn University seeks entrants for its Ninth Annual Outdoor Sculpture Competition. Open to all sculptors. Up to 10 sculptures are chosen with each receiving a $1000 honoraria for diasplay at Washburn University.

The Mobile Museum of Art announces a call for entries for their sixth "Southeastern Juried Exhibition". Change, Inc. provides one-time $1,000 emergency grants to visual artists of any discipline who are facing possible eviction, unpaid bills, fire damage or any other emergency the Change board deems worthy. Applicants must be professional artists who can demonstrate need. ART 21: Art in the 21st Century www.pbs.org/art21 Art:21 Art in the 21st Century is a new four-part PBS television series focusing on contemporary U.S. visual art and artists. The series is augmented by a website offering online chats with the artists, interactive community forums, artist bios, photos of work, detailed transcripts and film clips, a schedule and station finder, a downloadable educator's guide, and a place to order the Art:21 companion book and home videos.

The New Venue is accepting digital flick submissions for their rotating menu of short films in the Takeout section. All flicks need to be no larger than 5MB, and no longer than 15 minutes. New AAP/ORBI Artist Fast Track Program The Appalachian Arts Program (AAP) and the Ohio River Border Initiative (ORBI) are providing financial assistance so that the artists of our region can improve their skills, find new inspiration and expose themselves to new ideas. Artists and craftspeople, part-time or full time, with professional experience, may apply for grants in amounts up to $500. You may not apply for more than one grant in the state fiscal year period, July 1 to June 30. Eligible artists and craftspeople must live in Appalachian Ohio and the West Virginia counties that touch the Ohio River. Grants are intended to support immediate, short-term projects that have a positive impact upon the career development of artists by helping them: (1) increase access to audiences and venues, (2) develop new skills and insights, (3) investigate new artistic ideas and approaches. Projects must have a specific beginning point and a specific end point.
