Vote For Judge Still Unknown

Uncertainty surrounded the status of Criminal Court Judge in McDowell County Wednesday pending a count of write-in votes cast Tuesday in the general election in McDowell County.
The judgeship became vacant shortly after the May primary election when Judge L. R. Morgan, Democratic candidate for re-election died.
Upon Judge Morgan's death there was insufficient time for the two major political parties to nominate candidates for the seat. In the interim a special judge has been appointed for each session of Criminal Court.
According to the Circuit Clerk's office, a large write-in vote was cast for attorney Leon P. Miller of Welch who has been appointed special judge for the last two terms and is a Republican. Votes also were cast for B. Hassan, Democrat, a former Welch resident who now is practicing law in Charleston.
Alex B. Cyphers, circuit clerk, said the votes would be tabulated and made public Nov. 12 when the general election votes are canvassed. At the same time, absentee ballots will be accounted for and added to the total of votes received by each candidate.
