His Excellency Governor Boreman
Dear Sir
I learn that there are men in other parts of the county that are making an effort to fill the Guard of the County, (Doddridge) by getting men to volunteer and as there is no person properly authorized [sic] in this part of the county to recruit. If you will give me such authority I believe I can get quite a number to enlist. have had frequent calls during the last three or four days by persons wishing to take the Bennty and enter the service. The supervisors of the county have offered Three Hundred Dollars. I am satisfied with a proper effort the number of men required of the county can be raised without drafting.
By reference to Mr Edwin Maxwell of the Senate you may learn. Probably all that is [?] of one. I am unfit for military duty myself.. but feel willing to do all in my favor for the interest of the County. If you are pleased to give me the authority as him. You will please inform me how soon the men enlisting will be required to report to Wheeling. and of what [?] there will be made for transportation --------- will also need some Enlisting papers----- address me Smithlove Doddridge County_W_Va
