Dear Sir,
Immediately after the receipt of your letter of the 27th of July - I sent word to Capt Brooks to come up, he was here to-day - and will go to Mount Vernon Church in Putnam Country as soon as he can get ammunition - being now almost entirely without cartridges - says requisition for ammunition is in hands of Adjt Genl, Capt Brooks also wants requisition camp kettles & three [illegible] - and for fifty pair of shoes. I directed Capt Brooks to see Capt Ball and get ammunition from him until his can be sent - so that he could go to Putnam County immediately, but do not know that Capt Ball has any to spare, I wrote you in my letter of the 22nd that there were two companies of the 7th Va Cav. at Coalsmouth and that I thought Capt Brooks Company could be better spared, than Capt Balls, I can hear of no Rebels in this section except for the Guyandotte River Country - and there only in small thieving parties - a few weeks will decide whether we are to have a Rebel force in this Valley.
I would be glad if you could get the ammunition for Capt Brooks shipped first chance as there is none here of the same sized cartridges - his is 58. We have been very dry here and river is getting very low. Boats still running to Gallipolis in Government Service - others laid up.
