Child of the Rebellion: West Virginia Sesquicentennial
Civil War Union Militia Correspondence

Coals-Mouth , Kanawha C WVa
Sept. 1864

To his Excellency A.I. Boreman
Governor of West Va

Sir _ we the undersigned Remaining members of R. Brooks Company of Kanawha C Scouts__ would most respectfully call your attention to the following statement of facts_

[?] to difficulties having arisen in the company of which you have before been informed, nearly all of our company have left and enlisted in the U.S. service_there are now bout seventeen "17" men in our company and five "5" of these are unfit for service leaving a total of twelve "12" men for duty_the smallness of our numbers renders it impossible for us to do the country any service "in fact there are not enough of us, to protect ourselves, unless assisted by U.S. troops and there are several morr of the this men, that are going into the U.S. army , which will reduce the company to a mere nothing_

The feeling that we have not been [?] and honorably dealt with, still remains and it is utterly impossible for Capt. Brooks ever to recruit another man for the company-

Now in consideration of these facts, and they are facts, we most respectfully and earnestly ask you, to disband the company and release us from farther service in it_

If you are not discord to believe our statement in regard to the matter_we would respectfully refer you to any of the preeminent "Loyal Union men in this place_

Trusting that in justice to the State, of which you are the respected executir and in justice to the remaining men of the company_ that you will grant us our petition___ we remain

Your most obt. Servants
