Photograph, President John F. Kennedy appointed Stewart Udall as Secretary of the Interior in 1961, causing some complaints by eastern coal people about his supposed ties to western interests. Udall toured West Virginia with Senators Jennings Randolph and Robert C. Byrd for public relations.
