Abstract: The Okey DeRaimo Collection consists of nearly 2,000 photographic negatives taken by Okey DeRaimo during his thirty-five-year career with Armco Steel. DeRaimo, one of seven brothers to serve in the United States armed forces during World War II, was an Army Air Force bombardier on a B-17 Flying Fortress in Europe with the 401st Bomber Group. The B-17, nicknamed Stubborn Jean, was shot down on December 30, 1943. Initially reported as missing in action, DeRaimo and eight other surviving crewmembers were taken prisoners of war. He was imprisoned in the South Compound of Stalag Luft I in northern Germany until May 1, 1945, when he was liberated by Russian troops. Upon returning to the United States on July 1, 1945, he joined his family and began coal mining. DeRaimo captured rarely seen images of underground work in addition to community events and everyday life in coal communities in Boone, Kanawha, and Raleigh counties. Mr. DeRaimo developed his own numbering system for the negatives by numbering the photos as they were taken chronologically, a system which we have chosen to keep. Gaps in the numbering represent photos that were missing from the collection when it was received by West Virginia Archives and History. Negatives marked as damaged have been removed from the collection due to fear of contamination. These images have been scanned to the best of our abilities.
