In accordance with a call made to the citizens of this county, to meet in Convention at this place to consider the expediency of appointing delegates to the State Nominating Convention, soon to be held at Parkersburg, a very large audience assembled in the Court House on the 4th inst. for that purpose.
The meeting was organized by appointing James Morris President, Jesse Henderson and Peter Hartley Vice Presidents, and Frank Miller Secretary.
The meeting being called to order, the President arose and made a few explanatory remarks in regard to the object of the meeting.
After which General Boyers delivered a brief but appropriate address, during which he took occasion to show the expediency of appointing a larger number of delegates than was actually necessary, in view of the fact that a majority of them might fail to attend, as it was not a very "fat" office. He concluded by suggesting that twelve delegates be appointed to represent Tyler county in the Parkersburg Convention.
On motion, it was
Resolved, That the meeting appoint twelve delegates, and that they be chosen separate, and from all parts of the county.
After a few remarks by Rev. D. Sweeney, as to the kind of men who should be appointed - unconditional Union men, etc.,
On motion, the meeting proceeded to make the following nominations:
Delegates - Rev. Daniel Sweeney, Judge Soper, Valentine Smith, Levi Hissem, Geo. Long, Wm. B. Kern, James M. Smith, Simon Hawkins, Gen. J. E. Boyers, dr. J. T. Nicklin, Isaac Davis, Thomas Nicklin.
On motion it was resolved that the officers of this meeting also be appointed Delegates to the Convention.
The following resolutions were offered by Gen. Boyers, and were unanimously adopted:
Resolved, That Tyler county instructs her Delegates to vote in Convention for unconditional Union men for the various offices to be filled, and for none others.
Resolved, That the proceedings of this meeting be sent to the offices of the Wheeling Intelligencer and Virginia Plaindealer, for publication.
On motion, the meeting adjourned.
