Meeting in Wetzel - Delegates appointed to the Moundsville Convention.
September 8, 1863
At a meeting of the citizens of Wetzel county, called at the Court House September 2nd, (that being Court day). The meeting was called to order by appointing George W. Bier, President, and John R. Brown, Secretary.
On motion, a committee of five were selected to prepare business for the meeting: whereupon, Dr. J. Young, J. M. Bell, C. Conner, Hugh Kirkland and F. E. Williams were appointed said Committee. After retiring a short time they returned and reported the following preamble and resolutions which were adopted:
Whereas, believing that our county as one of the counties composing this Congressional district is at this time deeply interested in the selection of a good and true man to represent this district in the next Congress, and believing that unity of action is an all important element of success, and believing that this unity of action can best be secured by and through the means of a friendly intercourse and consultation with our fellow citizens of the other counties forming the Congressional district, and having been apprized that a Convention for this purpose will be held at Moundsville, Marshall county, on the 30th day of this month,
Therefore be it resolved, That we appoint delegates from this county to said Convention.
Resolved, That the following named gentlemen be, and are hereby appointed said delegates: J. Murphy, J. Young, Hugh Kirkland, E. Walker, F. G. Steel, U. Martin, Thos. Burgep, R. Cook, J. Kirpatrick, M. Carney, J. M. Bell, G. H. Beir, John R. Brown, H. S. Sayre, R. Martin, F. E. Williams, W. D. Walker, John Moore, Wells Kenney, John Clark, F. Bell, Enoch Roberts, Jas. G. West, E. Kyle, J. Shriver, J. King, Levi Stanley, L. M. Lowe, A. Honbier, J. Alley, Jos. Savage, J. King, H. Alley, E. Morgan, H. J. Morgan and Stacy Stevens.
Resolved, That we do not instruct our delegates to vote for any particular person, but to give their cordial support to any good and true man who may seem to the Convention to be the proper person to fill that position.
Resolved, also, That as a county, we believe that we are entitled to the Senator in this Senatorial district, and having understood that the county or Marshall has signified her willingness to cede us this right, be it therefore
Resolved, That we proceed to nominate some suitable person to fill the position of Senator for the ensuing term from this Senatorial district.
Whereupon James G. West, Col. W. D. Walker and John R. Brown were put in nomination, and after several balloting John R. Brown was declared the nominee.
Resolved, also, That we proceed to nominate some suitable person as our representative in the coming General Assembly.
Whereupon Reuben Martin, Esq., was declared the nominee.
Resolved, That the proceedings of this meeting be sent to the Wheeling Intelligencer for publication, and with the request that the other papers of the district please notice.
