A Bold Act in Harrison County.
October 14, 1863
We have a letter from Clarksburg last evening informing us of the following circumstance:
On last Friday evening the residence of Mr. Coffman, living on Ten Mile, some twelve miles from this place, was unceremoniously entered, and while the family, in company with a neighbor, were sitting around the fire, fifty miles within our lines, and entirely unconscious of danger, three ruffians in Confederate uniforms leveled their carbines at the terrified group, at the same time ordering them not to move. - One of the scoundrels ordered a young man out of the house, where there were three other villains, and compelled him to go to the stable and bring out three horses. With these horses they started off, leaving the astonished family paralyzed with fear at this unlooked for invasion. It is believed that these prowling scoundrels were mostly, if not all, from the neighborhood and piloted by their secesh and copperhead friends. It seems strange indeed that such things can be perpetrated so close to the commanding General and whilst so many troops are lying about here. B.
