Wheeling Intelligencer
December 11, 1863

The following officers and men of the 12th West Virginia Infantry have been detailed for recruiting duty in this State, and arrived in the city on the evening train.

Company I - Capt. R. H. Brown.
Company G - Lieut. V. B. Hall.
Company A - Sergt. Jos. Tomlinson.
Company C - Sergt. M. Gardner.
Company E - Sergt. R. Haymond.
Company G - Sergt. G. A. Fortney.
Company I - Sergt. M. B. Campbell.
Company B - Sergt. Alfred Gaines.
Company D - Sergt. Henry Spear.
Company H - Sergt. R. M. Wallace.
Company K - Sergt. John A. Briggs.
Company F - Private E. Hayhurst.

But little need be said on our part of the 12th Regiment. It is composed of men from nearly every part of the State, and so far constitutes a representative Regiment. The Governor is determined to afford every inducement for filling up the quota of the State before the time for drafting arrives. The general supposition seems to be that with proper effort our quota can be easily filled by volunte[e]r enlistments. As far as our acquaintance goes we feel safe in saying that the officers and men detailed on the recruiting service are fair representatives of the kind of men that compose the 12th Regiment.
