Meeting at Cameron.
August 2, 1864
A meeting of the citizens of Cameron and vicinity was called to meet at that place on the 23d ult. Pursuant to said call a large and respectable meeting was held. The meeting was called to order by electing J. B. Hagar, president, and J. L. Parkinson, secretary. The object of the meeting was stated by the president, to be to take measures to secure our quota of soldiers under the late call for 500,000 men.
After several motions were made and discussed, it was finally agreed that the meeting recommend that the county pay a bounty of two hundred dollars and two dollars per month to single men, and four dollars per month to married men. It was moved and seconded that the supervisor of this township be instructed to request the board of supervisors to meet, and that he use his influence to have the wishes of this meeting carried out. This motion was put and carried in the affirmative.
The meeting then proceeded to appoint delegates to the Grafton convention.
On motion, it was resolved, that this meeting appoint six delegates tot said convention, and that the lower end of the township be requested to appoint the same number.
On motion the meeting appointed J. L. Parkinson, Silas Ingram, Jas r. Bell, W. W. White J. H. Pipes, and John Laughlin delegates to said convention.
It was moved and seconded that any loyal man from this township who may be at Grafton, be requested to act as a delegate for the township in said convention. The meeting then adjourned.
