Wheeling Daily Intelligencer
October 11, 1864

The Union men of La Belle Town, South Wheeling, where they never do thing by halves, raised their magnificent Lincoln and Johnson pole yesterday afternoon, and it now flaunts its gay pennant 173 feet above ground. Jno. R. Hubbard and Theodore Gorrell, made short speeches after the pole was up.

The work goes bravely on. Union meetings were held at all the places appointed last night and the spirit of the loyal men is warming up. To-night Washington and Madison Townships, comprising the 1st, 2d and 7th Wards and Fulton, meet at old City Hall, and every night until Friday. - The Thirds and Fourth Wards meet at the Central Club rooms. They Fifth and Sixth meet to-morrow night again at American Hall.
