Howard Lacy Ables
1921-1944

Army Pfc. Howard Lacy Ables of McComas, Mercer County, West Virginia, was reported killed in action in the Southwest Pacific on February 23, 1944. The U.S. Veterans Gravesites, ca. 1775-2006, site lists his date of death as January 28, 1944.

Howard was born in McComas on November 24, 1921, the son of Eldridge O. and Alley Webb Ables. Howard's enlistment records indicate he had attended grammar school, was single at the time of his enlistment (August 13, 1942), and had been employed in "unskilled occupations in extraction of minerals"; most likely, he was a coal miner like his father before him.

Pfc. Ables was awarded the Silver Star for his actions in battle. He was interred in Arlington National Cemetery (Section 12, Site 4839), on June 30, 1948.
