Remember...Glenn Gene Adams

Marine Pfc. Glenn Gene Adams was born in Princewick, West Virginia, on March 21, 1921. He was the son of Willie D. and Ottie Adams of Quinwood and grew up in Greenbrier County with siblings Lemme, John, Berrlyn, Mary, and Robert. From 1927 through 1936, he attended Hellems Hollow School at Crichton.
| In August 1943, Glenn entered the Marines at Charleston, West Virginia. On July 2, 1444, he was killed in action at Saipan in the Marianas Islands. In a letter to Glenn's father dated September 13, 1944, Navy Chaplain S. W. Salisbury said: "The war's tolls fall heavily on us all, but none know its sacrifice and cost so intimately as those who watch and wait, and pray for loved ones." |  Marine Corps Certificate, Glenn Gene Adams |
A September 7 telegram from Lieutenant General A. A. Vandergrift, Commandant of the Marine Corps, states:
Deeply regret to inform you that your son Private First Class Glenn G Adams USMCR was killed in action in performance of his duty and service of his county. No information available at present regarding disposition of remains. Temporary burial in locality where death occurred probable. You will be promptly furnished any additional information received. To prevent possible aid to our enemies do not divulge the name of his ship or station. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy.

Vandegrift follows up with a September 11 letter, adding: "There is little I can say to lessen your grief but it is my earnest hope that the knowledge of your son's splendid record in the service and the thought that he nobly gave his life in the performance of his duty may in some measure comfort you in this sad hour." |
For his service, Glenn received the Purple Heart, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Pfc. Adams was interred on February 15, 1950, at Long Island National Cemetery, Grave Number 10120, Section H.
