Remember...Joseph Irwin Grant

Joseph Irwin Grant and his twin brother William were born on February 10, 1918, in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, to William H. and Nell Baldwin Grant. They had an older sister and brother. The family later moved to Weston, West Virginia where the elder William Grant was employed in the glass business.
| Joseph attended Weston High School. While a student he was a member of the HI-Y Club, which was affiliated with the YMCA and promoted Christian character in the school and community. After graduating in 1937, he worked at Pittsburgh Plate in Clarksburg until entering the service. On January 11, 1942, Joseph married Norma Lee Strader, a laboratory technician at Myers Clinic at Philippi, in Clarksburg. |  Hi-Y. Joseph Grant is on the front row.

In July 1942 Joseph joined the Marines. He received training at Parris Island, South Carolina, and assisted as an instructor at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He also trained at Camp Pendleton, California. Joseph sailed for the Pacific Theater on Christmas Day 1943 as a member of the 25th Regiment, 4th Marines. Joseph Irwin Grant participated in the invasion of the Marshall Islands and was killed during the landing on Saipan in the Marianas on June 23, 1944.
The body of Pvt. 1st Class Joseph Irwin Grant was returned to the United States and in January 1949 was buried in the Masonic cemetery near Clarksburg.
