Remember...Thedford Thomas Hughes

Hughes entered the military in October 1942 and underwent basic training at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. Before being shipped overseas in March 1944, he married Lillian Cox in Raleigh County on March 13, 1943. A member of the 322nd Field Artillery Battalion, 83rd Division, Hughes was stationed in England prior to the June 1944 D-Day invasion and later served in France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Germany. On February 12, 1945, Cpl. Hughes was killed in the Netherlands.

Lamer Lynell Hughes, younger brother of Thedford Hughes, was born on May 20, 1925, at Affinity to Robert T. and Louisa Massey Hughes. He attended Woodrow Wilson High School and was employed at the Lillybrook Coal Company store at Affinity before entering the military in August 1943.
Lamer Hughes underwent training at Camp Adair, Oregon. Assigned to the 362nd Infantry, 91st Division, he was sent overseas to North Africa in early 1944 and later went to Italy. The 362nd participated in the Arno River Campaign in July and moved north through Italy in September. Pfc. Hughes was killed in action on September 23, 1944.
