Kennedy Bringing Campaign Drive Into County April 27 With Big Rally Charles Town Race Course
April 14, 1960
Senator John Fitzgerald Kennedy will make his major bid for the Eastern Panhandle Democratic vote in the West Virginia Presidential Primary at a speaking engagement at the old Charles Town Race Track Wednesday evening April 27, it was announced yesterday.
Announcement of Kennedy's plans to appear here was made two weeks ago but details of the program were not then formulated.
On Monday of this week the Senator's younger brother, Robert F. Kennedy, formerly chief counsel for the famed McClellan Committee investigating labor union racketeering, was in Charles Town to confer with Shirley M. Hunt of Charles Town on plans for the Senator's visit. Hunt is chairman of the local Kennedy for President Club. The public is invited to join.
Yesterday Hunt stated that the old Race Track, which will not then be conducting a racing meet will be available to take care of a large crowd. He stated that he and the younger Kennedy, brother to the Senator, had agreed that a large public meeting would be better suited to the occasion than a dinner meeting. The planned meeting will be strictly informal, in the nature of an old time political rally. Musical entertainment and group singing will set the stage for a major speech by Senator Kennedy which will commence at approximately 8:00 p.m.
