Two prominent young Fairmont Democrats will "run the show" when the Marion County Democratic Executive Committee stages a $10 a plate fund-raising dinner in the Fairmont Hotel at 6 p.m. Monday, it was announced yesterday.

Donald P. Smith, assistant purchasing agent of Monongahela Power Co., will be toastmaster and Bertram (Boots) Cousins Jr., general manager of the Fairmont Television Cable Co., will introduce U.S. Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota, the principal speaker.

Sen. Humphrey, whose appearance was arranged here before he entered the presidential primary in West Virginia May 10, is scheduled to arrive in Fairmont about 4:45 p.m., after campaigning from Charleston northward during the day. He will attend a pre-dinner reception sponsored by the Marion County Young Democratic Club between 5 and 6 p.m.

County Chairman Chilton A. Campbell expects some 300 will attend the dinner, although it conflicts with the appearance of All-America Jerry West as the principal speaker at the annual athletic banquet at St. Peter's High School. The Maroon Athletic Association already has announced a sell-out for the banquet featuring the West Virginia University basketball star.

Smith, who attended East Fairmont High School, Fairmont State College and West Virginia University, is married to the former Mary K. Wolfe. They have five children and reside at 56 Jo Harry Drive.

A part exalted ruler of Fairmont Lodge No. 294, B.P.O. Elks and a past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Smith has been active in civic affairs. He was "Man of the Year" here in 1948 and subsequently received the state award from the Jaycees as the "Outstanding Young Man in West Virginia." He is a Presbyterian and a member of TBI.

Cousins also is a native of Fairmont and attended Fairmont Senior High School, Greenbrier Military School and Fairmont State College. Married to the former Barbara Rex, he is the father of five children. They reside at 1220 Katherine Street.

He is a member of the board of deacons of the First United Presbyterian Church, president of the Kiwanis Club and on the boards of the American Red Cross, Girl Scouts, Community Council and Marion County Little Theater. He also is a TBI and a past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

While Humphrey's formal address here has not been scheduled as a part of his primary campaign, he doubtless will speak on the issues of the coming election in his speech. The Minnesota senator will remain here overnight before continuing his bus tour of the state.

Meanwhile, campaigning for Humphrey's primary rival, Sen. John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts, continued in the county. The latter's brother, Attorney Ted Kennedy, and Joe Stydahar, former West Virginia and professional football star and coach, toured a number of county towns yesterday and visited Consolidation No. 9 mine of Mountaineer Coal Co. at Farmington where they greeted workers underground.

The pair will be in Grafton this afternoon and in Hundred tonight, returning to an open house at Grant Town at 9:15 p.m. They are booked for a coffee at Farmington Town Hall between 2 and 4 p.m. tomorrow, when they will be joined by Sam Huff, pro football star, who also is campaigning in Kennedy's interests.

Activity in the Republican ranks also is planned for tonight when the Marion County '54 Club holds a candidates' dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Eagles Home./ Former City Directzor [sic] Charles A. Jenkins will preside as toastmaster.

James L. Turner, president of the club, will open the meeting, at which former Sen. Chapman Revercomb, now a candidate for governor, will speak. Several state candidates and most of the Republicans on the county ticket are expected to attend. Attorney William P. Lehman will give the invocation.

Attorney Ted Kennedy of Boston, Mass., was conducted on a tour of consolidation No. 9 mine of Mountaineer Coal Co. at Farmington yesterday while stumping Marion County in behalf of his brother, Sen. John F. Kennedy. He is shown seated at the controls of a 50-ton mine motor named in honor of Sam Huff, pro football star who grew up in Farmington.
