Cheerful and grinning, his tousled hair waving in the wind, Sen. John F. Kennedy (D-Mass) rolled into Huntington at 12:50 p. m. for his fifth visit.

The Senator's appearance followed a hectic morning of "off again, on again" appearance on the day's written itinerary. The senator's state headquarters at Charleston announced definitely this morning that he would not be here. Headquarters assigned his brother Ted to fill in and make a whistlestop tour of towns and cities in Lincoln, Wayne and Cabell counties. Meanwhile in Washington, Sen. Kennedy's office said he might be detained in Washington by a possible squabble over the Area Development Bill.

However, the Senate enacted the measure swiftly this morning and Sen. Kennedy was released and informed his West Virginia headquarters he would be able to fill his speaking engagements, beginning with the Huntington visit.

Kennedy's plane landed at 12:45 p. m. and he was whisked to the Cabell Courthouse lawn where he made a typical "Kennedy-for-President" address. He expressed confidence that he will win the West Virginia presidential preference in Tuesday's primary election.

Kennedy declared one of his first acts if he is elected president will be to push legislation for aiding West Virginia's distressed areas.

The day's schedule called for a tour of the West Fourteenth street area after luncheon. At 3 p. m. he was due in Ceredo for a 20-minute visit and then to Kenova at 3:30 p. m. A telecast over WSAZ-TV was scheduled for 8:30 p. m.

Meanwhile, arrangements proceeded for a Mother's Day tea Sunday in honor of Senator and Mrs. Hubert H. Humphrey and their children at the Huntington Junior League Community Center, 619 Ninth avenue. The hours are from 2 to 4 p. m.

Senator Humphrey (D-Minn) is Senator Kennedy's opponent for the West Virginia presidential preference.

Members of the Cabell-Huntington Democratic Women's Club will serve as hostesses at the tea. It is being jointly sponsored by the club and by the Huntington Humphrey for President group.

Personal arrangements for the Humphrey family are being made by Mrs. Conley H. Dillon.

All of Senator John F. Kennedy's appearances in Cabell, Wayne and Lincoln counties today have been cancelled, his state headquarters at Charleston announced this morning. The senator, a Massachusetts Democrat, is seeking the West Virginia presidential preference in the primary election next Tuesday.

Kennedy is remaining in Washington until about 4 p. m. to vote to clean up office work which has been accumulating.

He will leave Washington by plane late this afternoon and will fly direct to Kanawha Airport at Charleston. He will appear at a rally in Charleston at 8:30 p. m.

Senator Kennedy had been scheduled to appear in Huntington over the noon hour today.
