Patterson, and his twin, Smith, were brothers of William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield. Nancy (Vance) Hatfield was their mother. After the death of Ephraim (Big Eph) Hatfield, Nancy lived with Patterson and his family until she died in 1895 on Mate Creek in Mingo County, West Virginia.
