Historical Note: Eskew, Smith and Cannon traced its origins to a candy company started in Charleston by William J. Eskew and another man in 1887, with Alexander Q. Smith joining about 1890 and H. P. Cannon about 1895, and Eskew's original partner leaving the business. Eskew, Smith and Cannon remained in the candy manufacturing business until the late 1930s but over the years added selling stoves, tinware, groceries, radios, televisions, refrigerators and other appliances. The business incorporated in 1905 shortly after the death of A. Q. Smith, and W. J. Eskew served as president until his retirement in 1925. At that time, David M. Giltinan became president, and members of the Giltinan family remained with the business until it closed. Records in the collection consist primarily of minutes, financial records, and photographs. Although minutes of the corporation, as well as stock records and some compiled financial records, go back as early as 1905, the majority of business records date to the post-1936 period.

The Appleton, Smith, and Giltinan families were related by marriage. Eskew, Smith and Cannon partner Alexander Quarrier Smith, the son of Isaac Noyes Smith and Caroline Shrewsbury Quarrier Smith, was a member of a prominent Charleston family. In 1891, he married Ethelind Parker Appleton, daughter of West Virginia's adjutant general and Salt Sulphur Springs owner John W. M. Appleton. When he died in 1905, Alexander Smith left three young children: Benjamin Harrison Smith, Everard Appleton Smith, and Elsie Quarrier Smith. His widow Ethelind received nearly one-third ownership in the new corporation of Eskew, Smith and Cannon while her brother-in-law Harrison B. Smith served on the company's board on behalf of the family. Her two sons died unexpectedly in 1921, leaving Elsie as the sole descendant of Alexander Q. Smith. Later that year, Elsie married David Murray Giltinan, and they had three children: David Murray Giltinan Jr., Alexander Smith Giltinan. and Ethelind Appleton Giltinan.

Much of the family papers connect to David Murray Giltinan and Elsie Smith Giltinan and their children. Included are correspondence, photographs, school materials, and civic and social activities. Topics addressed include the U.S. Naval Ordnance Plant at South Charleston, World War II service, Charleston Memorial Hospital, and aviation. A much smaller portion of the family papers concern the Smith and Appleton families.
