Processing Notes: The new intellectual organization implemented at West Virginia Archives and History involves arranging the donated materials in a way that allows for a better understanding of historical context. Instead of grouping the materials solely by format, they are now organized by person and then by format, all in a chronological order.
Historical Note: Colonel Charles Lewis (1736-1774) was the youngest son of John Lewis (1678-1762) and Margaret Lynn Lewis (1693-1773). They settled in Staunton, Virginia, around 1729-1731. Colonel Charles Lewis's son, Charles Cameron Lewis I, was just a month old when his father died at the Battle of Point Pleasant. Charles Cameron Lewis I inherited lands and a farm in Bath or Augusta County from his father's service in the French and Indian War. After serving with General Anthony Wayne in the 1790s, he sold his lands and bought a farm on the Ohio River near Point Pleasant between 1800 and 1803.

Charles Cameron Lewis I passed away in 1803, leaving the farm to his son, also named Charles Cameron Lewis (1802-1841). This second Charles married Eliza Steenbergen, and their son Peter Steenbergen Lewis (1834-1919) built the existing Italianate house on the farm. Peter attended the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and served in the Virginia militia before the Civil War.

Under Peter Steenbergen Lewis, the Beechwood farm was established. The farm focused on cattle, sheep, and grain. His son, Charles Cameron Lewis (1874-1964), continued the success, establishing a renowned herd of milking Shorthorn cattle and served as the President of Point Pleasant's Citizens National Bank (1929-1963).

Charles Cameron Lewis married his first wife, Katherine Marshall Neale, in 1901. They would go on to have four children: Margaret Lynn Lewis (1902-1984), Virginia "Ginny" Lewis (1904-1984), Charles Cameron Lewis Jr. (1906-1998), and Wiliam "Billy" Neale Lewis (1907-1980). After divorcing his first wife in 1917 or early 1918, C.C. Lewis married Anne "Brat or Bratty" Bratton (1890-1982) and they had one daughter, Annette (1927-2013).

Charles C. Lewis, Jr. (1906-1998), managed the farm and eventually changed its name from Beechwood Farm to Oldtown Farm. He invested heavily in infrastructure and turned it into the largest dairy farm in West Virginia. He gradually shifted his focus to investments.

Annette Lewis married John J. Seidel, Jr. His career with the Central Intelligence Agency took the family to the Middle East, primarily in Iran, Pakistan, and Egypt from the 1950's to the 1970's. After the death of Charles C. Lewis Jr. in 1998, the farm was managed by John J. Seidel, Jr, Annette's and John's son, until it was sold in 2001.

2. Certificate. Certificate of membership, Charles Lewis. Mason Lodge No. 42, Warm Springs, VA. In the Year of Masonry 5797 (1797).

3. Survey with plat. Survey of 2660 acres for John, Andrew, and Charles Lewis, in Woodford County, KY. Charles Lewis's portion was 886 acres (the parcel sold or exchanged to Purviance) 20 August 1793.

4. Letter. Charles Lewis, Lieutenant, 2nd U.S. SubLegion, to Major General Anthony Wayne. Greenville, August 9, 1795. Lewis asks for time "to regulate and adjust my domestic concerns" as his estate was in the hands of guardians and "I am well aware that the necessary attention to make it productive never has been taken." Note: This is one year after the Battle of Fallen Timbers (August 20, 1794); Lewis's commission in the Sub-Legion, signed by George Washington, remains with the family and is held by J. L. Seidel.

5. Letter. Samuel Moore to C. Lewis. 1 December 1796. Encloses a plat of a survey (no plat included).

7. Survey. For Charles Lewis. 280 acres in Greenbrier County on Sinking Creek. 22 November 1796. Includes metes and bounds and a small plat.

8. Agreement. Charles Lewis to Henry Purviance. 11 August 1799. Lewis makes title to a parcel of land in Woodford County, KY, containing 889 1/2 acres, "it being part of the Col. Charles Lewis military Survey of two thousand acres which was devised by said Charles to John, Andrew, and Charles Lewis as by reference to his Will recorded in Augusta County."

9. Letter. Wm Bourland to Charles Lewis. 7 September 1801. Notes attempts to sell land.

10. Letter. James Mason to Capt. Charles Lewis. 15 September 1801. Asks Lewis to confirm that he was present and can support Mason's claim that a apt. Anderson promised to complete a land survey for Mason prior to the expiration of a deadline for recording. Anderson did not do so, but apparently filed a claim for one of Masons "locations" in the name of his brother. The case is now in court.

12. Letter. Henry Purviance to Charles Lewis. 21 October 1801. Transmits conveyance documents needed to show title to the sale of part of the lands that Purviance acquired from Lewis.

13. Letter. Henry Purviance (Lexington) to Charles Lewis. 18 August 1801. One of three letters from Purviance related to land sale or exchange. Refers to contract for sale of land from C. Lewis to H. Purviance. Purviance requests documentation that has not been forthcoming. Gives details on military land grants to Lewis's father, Col. Charles Lewis.

14. Letter. A. S. Lewis to Charles Lewis (in "Ohio"). 14 August 1802. Family business. Sent via Mr. Jones.

15. Letter. Wm Bourland to Charles Lewis, Cowpasture, Bath County. 13 October 1801. References land that Bourland apparently has been trying to sell for Lewis, with little success. Note that part of the problem is a lack of improvements.

16. Letter. Charles Cameron to Charles Lewis. 6 November 1802. References "all my Relations on the Ohio. . . I am happy to hear that you are so agreeably situated." Note: Dates of 1800 to 1803 have been given for Lewis's arrival at Point Pleasant. This indicates that the move had occurred by late November of 1802.

17. Letter. G. Francisco to C. Lewis. 14 September 1802. Francisco is on his way to Kentucky in the company of John Lewis, Major Brown, and Wm. Kincaid. He is short of time, but will call on Lewis's family in the winter. Addressed to Lewis in "Kenhawa" County.

19. Letter. Charles Cameron to "Capt. Charles Lewis Near Point Pleasant in Ohio." 30 August 1803.

20. Letter. H. Purviance to C. Lewis. 1 January 1803. Enclosed certificate for land that Purviance obtained from Lewis in Woodford (County) "which I got from you in exchange for the lands above the Kanawha." Notes that the land Purviance received fell short of what he thought he purchased by 37 acres. Requests compensation and proposes a valuation (based on recent land sales) of $7 3/4 per acre, or $286.75.

1. Letter. Peter H. Steenbergen to Charles Lewis. No date. Refers to issues with banking signatures and their proper execution, as well as a bond he wants C. Lewis to collect at the bank.

2. Printed tract. 23 March 1836.
Delinquent Lands in Virginia. Legislative Act. Note: along with certain other items, these may have been sent to C. Lewis in his capacity as a Commissioner of Revenue.

3. Printed sheet. 1836. An Act imposing Taxes for the Support of Government. Passed March 22, 1836. Notation that this was sent to the Commissioners of Revenue, Mason, Va.

4. Letter. James Jeffers to Charles Lewis. August 1832. Refers to wheat for which Jeffers needs an order from Lewis for release. Offers to "deliver saw logs to the Pt. or Gallipolis." Also willing to "swap" a 5-year old steer for Lewis's "stag."

5. Letter. C. C. Lewis to Charles C. Lewis. 20 August 1832. Refers to money deposited on Lewis's behalf with the writer's uncle.

6. Letter. George Stephenson to Charles Lewis. 26 January 1832. Stephenson wants to rent land of Mr. Fry's on Poplar Fork, for which Lewis the lease.

7. Letter. John D. Lewis to Charles Lewis. 4 January 1833. Refers to Charles Lewis's bad health. Discusses bond for $266 payable "next Spring" and "Uncle Andrew Lewis holds Mr. Wm. R. Con's [?] bond for about $900. Note: John Dickinson Lewis was the second Charles Lewis's brother; Uncle Andrew was their father Charles's brother (both of whom were sons of Col. Charles Lewis). John D. Lewis had a salt enterprise on the Kanawha and there are references to a store.

8. Letter. Captain John Bush to Charles Lewis. 25 October 1833. Query on the possible sale of land on the "north side of the turnpike." [sic]

9. Letter. John D. Lewis to Charles Lewis. 16 December 1834. Refers to a trip to "get negroes." Note: labor was a constant problem for salt makers in the Kanawha salines, where production tripled during the period 1829-1849 (see Scott A. MacKenzie: The Slaveholders' War: The Secession Crisis in Kanawha County, Western Virginia, 1860-1861, West Virginia History, Vol. 4, No. 1, 2010).

10. Letter. John D. Lewis to Charles Lewis. 5 November 1834. Again refers to Charles's bad health, as well as that of their mother [Jane Dickinson Lewis]. Refers to C. Lewis's hogs, which could be driven up to John D. Lewis and slaughtered by November 20. "I have a full supply of bacon for Christmas, but can very easily dispose of any surplus that I may have." In a postscript, JDL says to tell Eliza [Charles's wife, Eliza Steenbergen Lewis] "that if the finest dress in the store would be any additional inducement to visit us, it will be cheerfully given, but could not be sent."

11. Letter. Charles Beale to Charles C. Lewis. 4 August [?] 1834. Beale is having difficulty in writing to "F.W." and requests Lewis's aid.

12. Letter. John D. Lewis to Charles Lewis. 13 July 1835. From the "Kanawha Salines." Letter regarding escaped slaves, the formation of a "Company of Pursuers," and efforts to guard river crossings and other avenues of escape. Gives details on recruitment, rewards, and salaries. JDL was appointed to command the Company and wants a good horse.

13. Letter. Garrison Jones to Charles Lewis. 3 June 1835. Received mares from Lewis and Mr. Beale and will give them his "every attention."

14. Letter. John Biggert to "Charles Lewis & other Heirs of Col. Andrew Lewis." 21 January 1836. Says that Charles Lewis's uncle, Andrew Lewis, had given him the promise of first refusal on a tract of land (in Franklin County?). Asks if they will sell him 200 acres and what price they want.

15. Letter. John D. Lewis to Charles Lewis. 28 November 1836. Expresses regret that Charles, Eliza, and family will be unable to visit this winter. JDL also unable to leave his business. Note that in the very cold weather it is an exertion to keep the furnaces [salt furnaces] in operation, "and much attention is required in hiring hands, for which there is much competition." Appreciates receiving Eliza's gift of a jar of butter, which is set aside for Christmas, and sends them table salt.

16. Letter. L. D. Wilson to Charles C. Lewis. 13 June 1837. LDW notes receipt of letter from CCL that he has $1,000 to loan. If he sends it to LDW, he will "dispose of it to best advantage." "Company papers" available at 1.5-2% per month or at the rate of 24% per annum.

17. Letter. E. [Narey?]. 16 March 1839. Writer is a Gallipolis physician and gives Lewis a diagnosis of tuberculosis and recommendations for care and treatment.

2.1:4 Appraisal of the Estate, Charles Cameron Lewis, 1842
This is a collection of bound pages and added papers that pertain to the estate of Charles C. Lewis after he died in 1841. Lewis's father-in-law, General Peter H. Steenbergen, was his executor. A total of 72 pages contains entries, beginning with an appraisal of the estate on 19 February 1842. Subsequent entries were made until 3 February 1856, 14 years later.

1. Bill of Sale. Larkin Standard to Charles Lewis. 10 March 1796. Sale of a "negroe Boy named Ben" for the sum of £92.10.

2. Bill of Sale. Layton Young of Rockingham County, VA to James Bratton. 15 February 1798. Conveys "a certain Negro man I have named Sam" to Bratton for £100. Note: This may be the same James Bratton (1746-1828) who was Anne Bratton Lewis's great grandfather.

3. Sales agreement. Margaret Lewis (of Mason County) to Charles C. Lewis. 22 October 1834. Conveys "a negro slave named Harry."

4. Memorandum of Agreement. Charles C. Lewis and Alexander & John Wine. 15 January 1836. Lewis leases to Wine a tract of about 12 acres. Notes on requirements such as fencing.
