Historical Note: Lewis "Lew" McManus was born on September 8, 1929, to Joab L. and Mattie Ferguson McManus in Beckley, West Virginia. Lew attended Beckley College for two years and graduated from Morris Harvey College as magna cum laude. He served six terms in the West Virginia House of Delegates. He was Speaker of the House from 1971-1976. McManus then served as the University of Charleston's College President from 1988-1989. He volunteered at multiple institutions and served on various boards until he died in 2002.
