Timeline of West Virginia: Civil War and Statehood
December 9, 1864

Wheeling Daily Register
December 10, 1864

Four Confederate prisoners were brought to this city yesterday morning, and placed in the Athenaeum. One of the number, a David Ritenhouse, was with Rosser when New Creek was taken. He says he recollects that his companions made a rapid march upon New Creek, surprised and captured it in broad daylight, but to anything further he cannot testify, as he got drunk over the affair, and knew nothing until he was in the hands of the Federals. Like a large majority of the prisoners recently captured in that section of country, the batch brought in yesterday were young men between eighteen and twenty years of age.
