Jacob Hornbrook, Esq., arrived yesterday from the front of Sheridan's army, four miles south of Winchester, where he has been for the last sixteen days, collecting money in the wake of the paymasters and bringing it home to the friends of our West Virginia boys. He reports one hundred and twenty thousand dollars, collected mostly in the Eleventh, Fourteenth, Fifteenth and a part of the Tenth regiments. Col. Alexander, who went out at the same time, is collecting in the First, Second and Third Cavalry regiments, and will be here in a day or two.
The boys were paid to the 1st of October, and the paymasters out among them were Majors Beazell, Safford, Doddridge and Wallace, the last named at Harper's Ferry.
The weather was intensely cold and trying for several days, and not a little difficulty was experienced among the troops in keeping comfortable. Mr. Hornbrook gives us many interesting items of information which, at this time, are not proper matters for publication. He will commence the distribution of the money collected, to day. The most of it of course goes to points more or less remote from the city.
