1860 was the first year the U.S. Census Bureau counted American
Indians as a distinct group. It is probable that many Indians were
identified as white, mulatto, or black, particularly in the early
census years.
Since West Virginia was not formed from Virginia until 1863, the
1860 census figures are based on those counties which later
comprised the state of West Virginia.
