The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History will kick off the season
with a Holly-loo-ya! Holiday Celebration Friday, Nov. 26, through Sunday, Nov.
28, at the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston. Highlights for
the weekend include a craft fair, holiday decorations and movies. The weekend’s
events are free and open to the public.
Holiday shoppers can bring their gift lists and shop in ease at the Holiday
Craft Fair. West Virginia artists and craftspeople will display gifts for every
taste and pocketbook. In addition, live music will be provided by Ryan Kennedy,
Chris Kimmons, Jarred Nutter, Katrina Sodaro and Jim Zeller. Craft fair hours
are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Fifteen craft booths will be set up in the Great Hall, including Bill Wood Scenic
Photography, Charleston, photography; Cat Designs, Cheryl Tincher, St. Albans,
jewelry; Garden Treasures, Melissa Dennison, Clem, herbal soaps and products;
Hickory Knoll Farm, Richard and Mary Nease, Given, Christmas ornaments and natural
products; Holcomb’s Woodworking, Phil Holcomb, Spencer, musical instruments
and wooden bookmarks; Holly White, Scott Depot, baskets; Isalene’s Inspirations,
Isalene Carol Nichols, Dunbar, hand-crafted wire jewelry; Mountain Girl Candles,
Vicki White, Mt. Gay, candles and gift baskets; Poe Enterprises, Michael Poe,
Gay, new and used West Virginia books; Quilted Treasures, Judy Parcell, Clay,
handmade quilts and other patchwork items; Spoons and Sweets Inc., Connie Bloss,
Cottageville, wooden spoons and other kitchen utensils and specialty foods;
Straight Fork Farm, Deborah Young, Ravenswood, aromatherapy items; Summer Hollow
Pottery, Wendy Summers, Wallback, pottery; Sunny Hollow Farms, Jill Brookover,
Auburn, Appalachian-style pickles and other products; and Woven Wheat and Straw
Arts, Sue Cosgrove, Chloe, crafts using wheat, straw and other natural fibers.
Visitors also can enjoy the continuing free movie series on the big screen in
the West Virginia State Theater. On Friday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m., they can see
The Plymouth Adventure starring Spencer Tracy and Gene Tierney in a film about
life aboard the Mayflower, and at 3 p.m. the 1935 version of Mutiny on the Bounty
starring Charles Laughton and Clark Gable. On Saturday, Nov. 27, at 1 p.m.,
the film is The Captives, West Virginia filmmaker Jude Miller’s story
about Shawnee captive Mary Draper Ingles, and at 2:30 p.m., Braveheart, the
Oscar-winning film featuring Mel Gibson as 13th century Scottish hero William
Wallace. On Sunday, Nov. 28, at 1 p.m. Jude Miller’s The Captives will
be shown again, and at 2:30 p.m. Around the World in 80 Days will be shown with
David Niven.
Wrapping up the weekend activities, participants can view the holiday decor.
Outside, on the north side of the building facing Interstate 64/77, two lighted
25-foot wreaths will be on display. The Great Hall will have nine, five-foot
wreaths in the windows, pillars and the balcony walls. In addition, the holiday
tree, decorated with holly garlands, and gold, silver, red and blue ornaments
will be on display in the Lobby Gallery.
