Eight young artists have been selected as winners in the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History’s annual Youth Art Month Exhibition, which is on display through April 10 in the Balcony Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The program is produced in cooperation with the West Virginia Art Education Association and the West Virginia Department of Education, in celebration of National Youth Art Month.
The winners’ work will be placed in the permanent collection of the West Virginia State Museum. Each of the eight winners will receive a $50 gift certificate from Dick Blick Art Materials at an awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 11, in the Great Hall of the Cultural Center.
Another three works in the exhibition have been selected to represent West Virginia in the annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students. The Congressional Competition is sponsored by members of the United States Congress and culminates in a summer exhibition at the United States Capitol building.
An additional three $100 awards will be given for Best of Show, Arts and Technology and Watercolor. The juror also picked two Judge’s Awards and four Honorable Mention Awards.
All winners were chosen by Dunbar artist Susan Poffenbarger. Poffenbarger has a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University, and also has studied at Marshall University, the Art Students League in N.Y., in specialized workshops with Richard Treaster, Nell Blaine and Janet Fish among others, and participated in a drawing marathon at the New York Studio for Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. She has had 15 solo exhibitions at The Art Store in Charleston; the Miller Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio; the Cultural Center of Fine Arts in Parkersburg; West Virginia State University in Institute; University of Charleston; and West Virginia University in Morgantown. Her work also has been in more than 60 invitational and juried exhibitions winning numerous awards including the Governor’s Award and Merit Award in the 1999 West Virginia Juried Exhibition. Poffenbarger’s art can be seen in many collections including Sunrise Museum, Huntington Museum of Art, DiTrapano, Barrett & Dipiero Law Offices, Bank One, Charles Ryan Associates, Charleston Civic Center, and Holcomb Land Co. to name a few.
The Youth Art Month Exhibition consists of 85 pieces by 84 students, grades K-12, from 23 West Virginia counties. Artworks in the annual exhibition were selected from a statewide competition.
