The West Virginia Archives and History Library of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History is offering a summer series of genealogy- and history-related workshops on selected Tuesday and Thursday evenings in July, August and September of 2006. The sessions will take place in the library at the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston, from 6-7 p.m. and are free and open to the public.
The workshops will focus on specialized resources available in the Archives and History Library and how to use them. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and will be offered hands-on examples or instruction with the materials and research issues involved.
The first workshop will be held on Tuesday, July 18, and Susan Scouras, archives and history librarian, will focus on newspapers in genealogical and historical research. On Thursday, July 20, Greg Carroll, staff historian, will lead a workshop on Native American history in West Virginia.
Additional workshops will be held on Tuesday, July 25, with Joe Geiger, assistant director of archives, who will discuss exploring the archives and history website; Thursday, July 27, a repeat of the Scouras workshop on newspaper research; and Tuesday,
Aug. 22, with Constance Baston, researcher, West Virginia Veterans Memorial Archives, who will focus on World War I and West Virginians on the front and home front.
The summer workshops will wrap up on Thursday, Sept. 14, and Tuesday, Sept. 26. Debra Basham, staff archivist, will discuss the proper care of photographs and documents on both evenings.
Genealogical and historical societies are invited to hold their regular meeting or to plan a field trip in conjunction with any workshop.
