The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History has established an online store for those interested in purchasing books, videos and music produced by the Division, current and previous issues of Goldenseal magazine and copies of photographs from the West Virginia State Archives. The store can be accessed from the Division’s website at www.wvculture.org.
Currently, there are six books for sale, including two that were published by Goldenseal magazine. “Mountains of Music: West Virginia Traditional Music from Goldenseal” is a collection of articles from the magazine. “The Goldenseal Book of the West Virginia Mine Wars” reprints 17 articles originally published from 1977-91, and includes dozens of historic photographs.
“From a ‘whirlpool of death . . . to victory’: Civil War Remembrances of Jesse Tyler Sturm, 14th West Virginia Infantry” relates Civil War stories of a Union veteran born in 1844 in Marion County, and “West Virginia History, Volume 59” highlights military service, looks at the State Archives online database of John Brown materials and more.
The Division’s latest publications also are available: “Marking Our Past: West Virginia’s Historical Highway Markers” contains locations, complete inscriptions and more than 100 photographs of the state’s highway markers. “Picturing West Virginia: A Century of Collecting by the West Virginia State Archives 1905-2005” is an eclectic selection of 150 photographs from the thousands of images that represent a century of collecting by the State Archives.
In addition to the books, patrons can buy the video “Vandalia: The Tradition Continues” (VHS format) which captures the sights and sounds of the annual Vandalia Gathering held at the Cultural Center and State Capitol grounds, and “Vandalia: The Music Never Dies” a double CD compilation of the music of the masters from the first 10 years of the festival. Shoppers also can subscribe to Goldenseal magazine, the Division’s quarterly publication of West Virginia traditional life, or purchase current and previous issues of the magazine.
The online store also has copies of selected photographs from the West Virginia State Archives collection. The photographs are available as 8” x 10” black and white prints.
