The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History will host an Open House at the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston on Monday, May 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The evening’s activities include an overview of services by the SHPO at 5:45 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
The Open House will offer a behind-the-scenes look at resources available from the SHPO for preserving historic properties. Staff historians and archaeologists will be on hand to answer questions relating to preservation grants, certified local governments, tax credits and other available programs. The Open House will be held in the lower level of the Cultural Center in the Green Room. Participants should go down the ramp behind the building and enter through the Security Door at the main loading dock.
On Tuesday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the SHPO will conduct a specialized architectural survey training session at the Cultural Center. This program will address requirements for history and architecture surveys and for architectural and historic review and compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act. Professionals in the fields of historic preservation, cultural resources management and state and federal government are encouraged to attend. The training session is free, and reservations are required. Participants should enter through the front door entrance and meet in the Great Hall.
The Open House and architectural survey training session are part of the SHPO’s celebration of Historic Preservation Month, which the National Trust for Historic Preservation designated as May. The Cultural Center is located off Exit 99, Greenbrier Street of I-64/77.
