The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History will present a Historic Preservation Road Show on Monday, June 20, from 2 - 4 p.m., at West Virginia Independence Hall Museum in Wheeling. The program, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Museum’s celebration of West Virginia Day.
Members of the SHPO staff will be available to answer questions relating to grants, certified local governments, tax credits, and other resources for preserving historic properties. The program also will serve as an overview of resources available from the SHPO. The Road Show has been partly financed with Federal funds from the National Park Service, Department of the Interior.
West Virginia Independence Hall Museum is considered the birthplace of West Virginia. Originally built as a federal custom house in 1859, the Museum served as the home of the pro-Union state conventions of Virginia during the spring and summer of 1861 and as the capitol of loyal Virginia from June 1861 to June 1863. It also was the site of the first constitutional convention for West Virginia. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1988 and one of the sites on the Civil War Discovery Trail, the museum is owned and operated by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, with the cooperation of the West Virginia Independence Hall Foundation.
West Virginia Independence Hall Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the exception of major holidays, and is located in downtown Wheeling on the corner of 16 and Market Streets.
