The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History will host a Historic Preservation Road Show on Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Pocahontas County Opera House in Marlinton. The program is free and open to the public.
Members of the SHPO staff will be available to answer questions relating to grants, certified local governments, tax credits, and other resources for preserving historic properties. The program also will serve as an overview of resources available from the SHPO. The Road Show has been partly financed with Federal funds from the National Park Service, Department of the Interior.
The Pocahontas County Opera House is located on Third Avenue between Eighth and Ninth Streets. Constructed in 1910, the Opera House has hosted nationally known artists, theater productions, minstrel shows, movies, a roller skating rink and services for the Marlinton Presbyterian Church when the congregation was building a new church. The facility is the oldest reinforced concrete structure in West Virginia and is constructed of poured-in-place concrete re-enforced by logging train rails. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in March of 2000.
